'Nomadland,' Frances McDormand, Daniel Kaluuya, Chloé Zhao Take Home Trophies At 93rd Academy Awards — The Complete List Of Winners
Apr. 25 2021, Updated 11:20 p.m. ET
Hollywood's biggest night did not disappoint! The 93rd Academy Awards were held in-person at the Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Emerald Fennell took home the first award of the night, for the screenplay of Promising Young Woman; Daniel Kaluuya was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah; and Nomadland was named Best Picture.
This was the first awards show in recent months that was not mostly virtual. Now how did Academy achieve this milestone? Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins have ensured that all safety precautions are enforced.
“Of course, your first thought is CAN THAT BE DONE SAFELY? The answer is YES, IT CAN,” producers previously explained. “We are treating the event as an active movie set, with specially designed testing cadences to ensure up-to-the-minute results, including an on-site COVID safety team with PCR testing capability. There will be specific instructions for those of you traveling in from outside of Los Angeles and other instructions for those of you who are already based in Los Angeles. This will all come directly to you from the Academy to ensure you have a safe, carefree evening (a glimpse of the future?).”
Just like the two years prior, the Oscars had no host. However, there was a star-studded list of presenters, including Angela Bassett, Bong Joon Ho, Laura Dern, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Zendaya, among others.
The Oscars made history with having two female directors, Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennel (Promising Young Woman), nominated for Best Director. Zhao is the first woman of color to ever be nominated in the category, and she took home the award for Best Director. Only one woman has ever won the award before her: Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) in 2010.
A list of nominees follows; winners are bolded with an asterisk.
