The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) never fail in allowing celebrities and musicians to let their imagination and creativity run wild. This year’s ceremony was no different, and with the global pandemic forcing a change in fashionable thinking, it led to some truly unique outfits.
Lady Gaga
In case you missed it, Lady Gaga walked away with five awards, including Artist of the Year. But the queen of pop undoubtedly could have also taken the award for most costume changes – or even the weirdest ones. An acceptance outfit reminded us of Lord Of The Ring’s Sauron, while her outfit with Ariana Grande has a bit of a Mortal Kombat vibe to it – mask and all.
Doja Cat
Making a lasting impression on your first-ever MTV VMA performance seemed to be pretty high on singer Doja Cat’s bucket list. While performing ‘Say So’ and ‘Like That’ from her album ‘Hot Pink’, the singer was dressed in a barely-there outfit which gave off some serious mermaid looks.
Chloe x Halle
For the MTV VMAs pre-show, Chloe x Halle performed their single ‘Ungodly Hour’ while dressed in metallic ensembles. We get the feeling that we have seen these outfits before, but we just can’t put our finger on it.
Machine Gun Kelly
Machine Gun Kelly performed his single ‘My ex's best friend’ and ‘Bloody Valentine’ with the help of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. We can’t help but draw an artistic resemblance between his rooftop outfit, and the famous MTV Unplugged outfit that Kurt Cobain wore. We are not so sure about the pink mic stand though…
Joey King
Actress Joey King, who features in music videos for Marshmello, Yungblud and Blackbear, attended the awards wearing a flower-inspired Versace dress.
Black Eyed Peas
Social distancing and wearing a mask were a central theme to many who attended or performed at the VMAs. Some members of the group did wear masks in the beginning of the performance but the masks came off as soon as they launched into ‘I Gotta Feeling.’ The group’s outfits of choice were a bit bland, and we’re not so sure why they had to have lights down their pants.
